Su Xiaomo did as told. His wide shoulders made her feel very safe.

“I’ve called the police… what now? He must have an electric drill! Shit, will he burst in like in the movies…” Su Xiaomo couldn’t stop imagining things. He Jiayu couldn’t take it anymore and covered her mouth with a hand. “Stop it.”

“Hm…” Su Xiaomo struggled. He Jiayu rubbed her head. “Momo, calm down.”

His voice was so gentle that Su Xiaomo fell for it right away. She stopped talking.

“I’ll go have a look.” He Jiayu found the noise rather strange.

“No, you won’t! Look at your thin arms and legs! You’ll never beat him in a fight!” Su Xiaomo said anxiously. “Just stay here and wait for the police!”

A chuckle suddenly came from the window, followed by a conversation.

“Thank you so much, Mr. Zhang, for fixing up my room at such a late hour!”

“You’re welcome. It’s my pleasure.”

Fixing up his room?

Su Xiaomo was baffled.

Had she… misunderstood something?

He Jiayu thought the same. “Momo, you…”

“I what?! I’m a fairy and fairies don’t make mistakes! That must be a trick! They’re trying to lure you out and you’ll walk right into their trap!”

The corner of He Jiayu’s mouth twitched. Just then, there was the sound of a police car siren downstairs, and he said with a smile, “I think I’ll go take a look. The police is here. If those really are the bad guys, I don’t think they’ll be bold enough to try anything.”

Biting her lip, Su Xiaomo hesitated, then took out that giant foot spa basin and stuffed it into He Jiayu’s hands. “Take this for your safety!”

He Jiayu was speechless.

With the kitchen knife in one hand and the basin in the other, He Jiayu went out onto the balcony.

There was no one outside, but the light was on in the flat next door, and he could faintly make out the sound of an electric drill.

Those people were still talking.

“Mr. Zhang, I’ll go have a cigarette outside!”

A middle-aged man walked out onto the balcony. Before he could light the cigarette, he saw He Jiayu with his “weapons.”

“Shit!” The man jumped. “Dude, we can talk about it! Don’t do anything reckless! Get away from me!”

Just then, police officers burst into the room and rushed to the balcony.

The man next door yelled, “It’s him! He tried to rob me!”

The police officers looked around in confusion, then pinned He Jiayu down before they could think it through.

“You brought a weapon to the crime scene?! Get down! Hands on your head!”

He Jiayu was baffled. “I’m not…”

“Shut up! Cuff him and bring him in!”

He Jiayu felt that he was reliving the nightmare again…

Su Xiaomo reacted quickly and rushed out to explain everything. “It’s not him!”

Everyone eyed one other in embarrassment, and only then did they realize that the whole thing was just a big misunderstanding…

–

At the police station.

Su Xiaomo was given a blow-by-blow account of what happened.

Her place really had been visited by a burglar the first time round, but that guy had been arrested a while ago, and the police officer in charge of the case forgot to inform her.

This time, her new neighbor was only getting his home done up and Su Xiaomo had simply been misled by her wild imagination.

After giving her statement, Su Xiaomo left the station to find He Jiayu sitting on the stairs and eating some yogurt.

Seeing her come out, He Jiayu tossed the box and walked toward her with a grim look on his face.

Su Xiaomo stumbled back involuntarily.
