“He he! Ge Ge, listen to what you’re saying. Second uncle is truly here to spend the first day of the year with you two. Don’t we all spend it together every year in the past?”

Pei Zhenghui did not mind her attitude as he continued smiling at her.

Seeing this, Pei Ge could not help but spat at him inside, Thick-skinned! He’s clearly here with some motives, but he still insists on being here to spend the holiday with us. Hur hur.

“Second uncle, I guess your memory is failing you since you are getting old. We’ve never spent the first day of the year with your family in the past. We merely had dinner together every New Year’s Eve and would then be chased out by you guys.”

She corrected sarcastically, not bothering to show him any good attitude.

Thinking about it now, this family has never treated us as their family.

These people clearly knew that it was hard to catch a cab on New Year’s Eve and that their house was far from theirs.

However, without fail, after dinner, her second uncle would chase them out with some excuse and would not even take the initiative to send them home. She and her mother always had to take a long walk before they could hail a taxi home…

“Okay, okay. Ge Ge, we are celebrating the new year, so let’s not talk about things from the past.” An awkward expression appeared on his face. He then laughed dryly and turned to look at her mother for help.

“Anyone who passes the door is a guest.”

Although Zhang Manhua did not like them intruding on her new year dinner with her daughter, this person was still her husband’s younger brother, after all.

Hence, although she did not like it, she still led them to the dining area.

Fortunately, as it was the new year, the pair of mother and daughter had prepared a lot of food. Hence, even with three extra mouths to feed, there was still sufficient food to go around.

After leading them to the dining area, Zhang Manhua went to the kitchen to fetch another three sets of utensils.

“Sister-in-law, is our Ge Ge and that Mr. Ji really going to get engaged?”

Upon receiving the utensils from her, he asked about this again.

“Mhm.” She only hummed lightly. She was not dumb. The only reason she had not seen through him in the past was that she had treated him as family.

After experiencing so many things, how could she not tell that this family had never thought kindly of them?

“Aiya! That’s great, then! We will be in-laws with the Ji family in the future!”

Her brother-in-law’s eyes lit up as bright as the stars in the night sky upon hearing her confirmation.

Pei Ge’s lips curved into a mocking smile. She snorted at his mention of such words.

“Second uncle, I don’t think this has anything to do with you.” She put down her chopsticks and turned to look at him coldly. “I think that our two families aren’t that close, so what kind of in-law are you?”

“Ge Ge, you can’t say that. Look at the difference your family and the Ji family has! If you have this rich uncle behind you, you will have a better life at the Ji.”

He was not angered by her mocking and just smilingly analyzed everything for her.

“A rich second uncle…” Her lips curled up into a cold smile as her clear eyes glinted frostily.

“Second uncle, do you know? Recently, while packing the things my dad left behind, I found out about something…”

He froze when he heard his elder brother being mentioned.

When he looked at her eyes, which seemed to say that she had discovered the truth, He could not help but ask, “What thing?”

“Was my father’s company really going bankrupt then?”

She did not directly answer his question but asked another, instead.

Without hesitating, he nodded quickly. “Of course. If not, the insurance from your father wouldn’t disappear entirely. Why are you asking this?”

She cocked a brow at his sincere expression, feeling even more suspicious of him.

If he did not get cheated by someone else, then it meant that he was also among them.

She was more inclined to believe this thought.

After all, this second uncle of hers was not a good person at all. This was especially since he had suddenly become a rich boss after her father’s death.

In fact, according to him back then, he had struck the lottery.

Now that she thought about it, that was truly too suspicious.

As she thought of this, she felt even more disgusted by his fawny, affectionate look.

“Second uncle, while organizing my dad’s things, I realized that Gemei’s prospects were actually really good. There didn’t seem to be any signs of bankruptcy…”

As she was suspicious of him, she did not reveal her father’s work notes.

“What?!”

He was clearly very shocked by this that his wide eyes shone with panic.

The panic in his eyes confirmed her thoughts: This man had truly taken part in driving her father’s company to bankruptcy.

Hur hur! What a good brother he is! To think that dad treated this second uncle of mine so well back then!

Anger boiled in her heart. However, as she knew that she could not rouse his alertness now and that she did not have any evidence, she repressed the urge she had inside.

However…

Her eyes swept over Pei Shishi. She only casually glanced at her, but she actually found a sign of panic in her eyes. In fact, compared to her uncle, her cousin’s eyes actually shown with an additional sign of… surprise?

Why would she reveal this expression? Could it be that she knew something, too?

Suppressing the confusion inside her, she turned to look at her uncle cluelessly and innocently, as though she had not noticed his abnormality.

“What’s wrong, second uncle?”

He quickly regained his composure as he continued with his affectionate act. “No-Nothing. Ge Ge, where did you see those?”

“Ah, maybe I saw wrongly.” She thought about it for a while as her face turned uncertain.

At this, the flustered him sighed in relief.

“You must’ve truly seen wrongly. The matter with your dad’s company back then was very complicated. If your dad didn’t die, Gemei wouldn’t go bankrupt, but since your dad passed away, Gemei’s bankruptcy was inevitable…”
