Silence.

This silence brought a stifling tension in the air of the study.

Pei Ge held her breath when she saw the cold and cutting gaze of Ji Ziming’s father. Tiny beads of perspiration appeared on her forehead from the pressure.

“Miss Pei, let’s stop beating around the bush. I know exactly what kind of person you are, so you don’t have to pretend in front of me anymore.” He continued coolly, leaning against his chair and looking at her evenly.

Right now, why would he still follow his wife’s instructions to set aside his prejudice and properly chat with this woman before him?

“… Uncle, you’re really mistaken about me.” She pursed her lips tightly and cursed that annoying fellow in her mind.

Although this man misconstruing her was entirely due to her rashness, if not for Ji Ziming, she would never have to face off with his dad like this!

“Misunderstanding? Heh…” He coldly sneered and cocked a brow her way. He made it seem as if he were looking at a clown.

“Miss Pei tells great jokes, huh.”

She felt her head began to throb at this elderly person’s sarcastic glare.

“Uncle, it’s fine if you don’t believe me. My conscience is clear, and I’ve never taken anything from your son.”

On second thought, since she was not really this man’s son’s girlfriend and the two of them would not really end up together, why should she mind if his dad misjudged her?

How he thought of her did not actually concern her as she was merely a hired employee of his son.

As such, she gave up on explaining her side and getting into this elderly man’s good books.

“Uncle, I know that you dislike me and think that I’m only after your son’s money, so I don’t see a reason why we need to continue this conversation. Our mood will only get worse.”

When she surprisingly did not try to earn his favor and, instead, spoke directly, for a moment, he was taken aback and paused.

“Uncle, I’ve been meaning to say this; even if you don’t believe me, you should believe in your son. Ziming’s not stupid. Can’t he tell the intentions of those who get close to him?”

She stood up from the chair after she said her piece and moved to leave.

“Besides, can’t women like him for things other than money? Uncle, you’re looking down on your son. He’s so outstanding. Even without you and his family background, he can still captivate many women just by his merits.”

Yes, her affection for him was never about his money or looks.

She liked him purely because he was who he was.

Whether he was poor or just a common man, she simply loved the man called Ji Ziming.

He looked cold, but past that was a warm heart.

He was arrogant, awkward, and vain, but she happened to like him that way…

If he did not have such an unattainable family background and… already have someone in his heart, she would really go after him and push for this relationship.

After all, finding that one person in this vast sea of people was not easy.

How could one, therefore, not go after that person when their paths crossed?

Alas, Ji Ziming, this man that she loved, already had someone else in his heart…

Thinking up to that, she smiled bitterly.

“Uncle, it’s really not easy to meet that one for you in this vast sea of people. Just like how you met auntie whom you love dearly, Ziming has the right to be with the person he loves.”

So please don’t get in the way of his true love. Anyway, given his temperament and way of doing things, it’s only a matter of time before he brings her back.

Rather than get in his way, why don’t you let that annoying fellow be happy?

That way, it’s good for you, him, me, and everyone else…

“…” Listening to her words, his brows furrowed a little. He then looked at her hesitantly.

She… seems to be different from how I imagined her…

Did I really get the wrong idea about her?

He was shocked at the thought, not expecting his views of her to change so quickly!

This made him narrow his eyes threateningly at her.

This woman! She’s either really good at scheming or… it’s as my wife said: I got the wrong idea about her.

Anyway, neither seemed like bad news to him.

If this woman were a schemer, she could go against that other woman, be at each other’s throat, and wake his stupid son up by revealing their true colors.

If he were wrong about her… then it would be just like what his wife had said: his son finally desired another woman.

Given the size of the Ji family business, they did not need their son to marry a powerful family’s young mistress.

Thus, there was no problem with his son marrying this woman with nothing to her name.

“Then, uncle, I’ll take my leave now.” She bid the man’s father, who was making her uncomfortable, goodbye after taking a deep breath.

Who knew that, just as she moved to leave, he would call her?

“Hold on.” He looked at her sharply.

“En?” She returned his gaze with her confused one.

“I want to give you a test. If you pass it, I won’t interfere between you and my son anymore,”

he said coldly, eyeing her coldly still.

Although his tone was neutral, she could tell that he was serious.

“What test?” she asked subconsciously, shocked by this turn of events.

“I want you to leave Chenguang and Beijing…”
