“Sister Pei Ge… why do you like my cousin?”

The girl’s gossipy voice traveled through the line.

“Yes, he is handsome, but his temper is something few can tolerate.”

Her excited chattering streamed through the line.

Pei Ge’s lips curled up at the girl’s curiosity.

She was about to respond when she heard the young lady’s next words.

“Sister Pei Ge, don’t tell me that you fell for my cousin’s good looks, or… does my cousin become an obedient sheep, like my uncle to my aunt, before you?”

“Pfft!” She burst into laughter over the girl’s ridiculous description of the man.

“Ha ha ha!” She laughed until tears formed in her eyes. “Qitong, what nonsense are you spouting?”

The image of that man as a sheep kept resurfacing in her mind.

Ai ma! So cute! Ha ha!

“Nonsense? I’m not spouting nonsense. My uncle is like this; he is strict in front of others, but once he is with my aunt, he is beyond gentle. My brother says that that is true love,” she explained, clearly displeased to hear her laugh.

Her laughter immediately died down when the girl mentioned that. Her face then turned cold.

True love…

She was definitely not the man’s true love; that fellow had never treated her well.

“Sister Pei Ge, if my cousin didn’t give you special treatment, how did you end up liking him?” the girl asked, baffled.

She might be a naïve fresh graduate, but being born into a rich and influential family, she had naturally seen the ugly side of society.

She knew very well that many ladies desired her cousin and brother, even her father and uncle, not for their good looks but for their background, instead.

While they were indeed attracted to their charisma, a large part of that attraction was due to these men’s background.

This was especially the case for her cousin.

He had always been cold toward everyone, and after that past kidnapping incident where he almost died, he was even colder toward people.

Be the person a boy or a girl, he was not affectionate or gentlemanly.

Men and women were the same to him, and whether they looked pretty or ugly made no difference.

How could he attract any girl with his lousy personality, then? Even if they really liked him, it would be either because they did not know his true nature or were after his wealth.

However, she was sure that Pei Ge was not the kind of woman who would chase after her cousin for money.

Moreover, the latter was someone with a kind heart in her eyes.

Others might think that Pei Ge was unworthy of her cousin, but she, on the other hand, thought that it was the opposite; her cousin was the one unworthy of her sister.

“Sister Pei Ge, besides his face, what do you like about my cousin?”

The corners of Pei Ge’s mouth curled into a gentle smile at her question.

“Yes, what do I like about him…” she said aloud.

Thinking about it now, when exactly did she like that annoying person? She clearly hated him at the start.

When exactly did she fall in love with him?

Was it because of their many intimate contacts or the fact that he would occasionally treat her gently despite looking fierce?

Maybe it was because he selflessly protected her with no regard for his safety or… because he was the first one who willingly lowered himself to put the ‘glass slippers’ on her carefully?

“… Sister Pei Ge! Sister Pei Ge, are you still there?!”

She, who was reminiscing her moments with the man, was pulled back to the present by this yelling straight to her ear.

It turned out that she had unknowingly fallen for the man…

Her feelings for him were already this deep…

“Sister Pei Ge, are you okay?” Qin Qitong first thought that there was a problem with the connection, but when she heard the breathing of the person over the phone, she realized that it the latter was just daydreaming.

“Mhm. I’m fine.” She chuckled as her face showed surprise.

“Sister Pei Ge, what were you thinking about just then? You suddenly fell silent; I almost hung up the phone, thinking that it’s malfunctioning!” the clueless girl complained.

A faint smile formed on Pei Ge’s face as she responded softly, “I was just thinking about why I like your cousin.”

This interesting topic improved the girl’s mood up as it caught her attention.

“Well, then, Sister Pei Ge, have you found out why you like my cousin?” she asked curiously.

“Mhm. I found it out,” the other affirmed with a grin.

“So… Why do you like my cousin?” The girl waited with bated breath for her reply.

“I suppose it’s because…” she trailed off mischievously.

Being kept in suspense, she grumbled, “Sister Pei Ge, tell me quickly; don’t keep me hanging in suspense!”

“He he! My brain probably malfunctioned, and that’s why I like your cousin.” She giggled.

Silence filled the line for a while after she had said that, and then this was interrupted by a shrill scream over the phone.

“Ahhhh! Sister Pei Ge, you played me! How horrible!”

She laughingly shook her head at the girl’s grumbling. She was not joking and, in fact, was telling the latter her sincere thought.

Why else would she like that annoying fellow? If her brain did not malfunction, why would she like a man whom she was destined never to get?

Was this not looking for abuse?
