Zhang Manhua shook her head helplessly when she saw her daughter throw a tantrum.

“What nonsense are you spouting, child? Hurry up and return Xiaoyu’s call. That poor child is worried sick of you.”

With that, she forced the phone in her hand to her daughter.

“If she’s worried, then what about me in these few days? She even hung up on me earlier! Hmph!” she snapped angrily, refusing to take the phone.

“That lass didn’t hang up on you.” Seeing how angry her daughter was, she tried to explain what had really happened. “Xiaoyu’s phone ran out of battery. That’s why the call disconnected.”

“Ran out of battery? How did she manage to call me, then?” A ball of anger formed in her heart at her best friend’s acts of disappearing for a few days and hanging up on her.

Understanding her daughter’s source of anger, she could somewhat empathize with her.

Empathizing was one thing, but what had to be said must still be said.

“Ge Ge, I know you worry about Xiaoyu more than anyone else in this world, so don’t throw a tantrum and quickly return her call,” she urged helplessly. “Xiaoyu didn’t have it easy these few days, too. She really has a good reason—”

“What happened to her?” her daughter anxiously interrupted.

“That… is for you to find out. Call her.” She smiled.

“… I’ll call her now, but you have to tell me what’s going on with her,” Pei Ge asked again, truly anxious now.

How would she dare to throw a tantrum with her current state?

“All right, all right, all right. All this while, Xiaoyu’s boyfriend was in a coma in the hospital. She did not have her phone with her, so she forgot about it in her anxiety,” Zhang Manhua explained softly.

She frowned at her words, a look of displeasure flashing across her eyes.

“Forgot? She forgot about me because of that?” Her chest felt stuffy because of her best friend.

She had been so worried this whole time, yet her best friend had forgotten her because of a boyfriend?!

Did she have any loyalty left in her?!

This was clearly a case of her prioritizing a boyfriend over a friend!

“You child, Xiaoyu’s boyfriend was caught in a terrible accident; of course, she wouldn’t care about other matters. Just give her a call.”

Her mother urged again upon seeing how angry she was.

“Fine, but I’ll call her with my phone and not yours.” She pushed her mother’s phone away.

Zhang Manhua nodded. “Hurry up and do so, then. She’s close to tears when she called earlier.”

“All right; I’ll call her now.” She quickly took her phone out with that knowledge.

Switching her phone on, she discovered that she had eight missed calls and two messages, and all of them were from her best friend.

Seeing these many notifications, her lips curled up slightly before they twitched wryly.

“Mom, I’ll head out to give her a call.”

She headed to the door and wore her shoes.

Seeing that her daughter was about to leave again, she asked tentatively, “You’re just gonna call her; can’t you do that at home?”

“I ate a lot earlier; I’m thinking of taking a stroll to digest the food while I give her a call.” She gave this excuse on her way out of the house.

Don’t joke with me; I’ve got so much to say to Xiaoyu, and they aren’t exactly proper for my mom to hear.

She made her way down the stairs as she waited for her best friend to answer her call.

Du, du, du… As the phone continued to ring, she began to grumble suspiciously. Why isn’t she picking up my call?

She was starting to entertain some morbid thoughts when the phone connected.

Overwhelmed by her indignation, she launched into a lengthy tirade without giving her best friend a chance to say anything.

“… Rascal! Now you know how worried I was in these past few days!”

Concluding her rant, she waited for her best friend to explain herself, only to receive a shock.

“… Xiaoyu isn’t here.”

A raspy yet sexy voice, which certainly belonged to a male, sounded over the phone. It seemed that the person had just woken up as his voice was thick with sleep.

“Wh-Who are you?!” she exclaimed.

“I am—”

She did not wait for the man to introduce himself and just said, “Ah, I know! You are Xiaoyu’s boyfriend, right?!”

“Seriously. Why didn’t you say something when I was saying all that?”

Since this boyfriend, Gu Zhengrong, was the cause of her being unable to contact her best friend, she had a lot of opinion about him!

As such, she was slightly very direct with her words.

“Miss Pei, sorry about that; you spoke too fast earlier that I didn’t get a chance to cut in,” the man replied politely without a hint of anger.

Hearing such a polite reply, she could not continue her scolding.

“Forget it; forget it…” What was the point of getting angry with a sick person, anyway?

As she opened her mouth to say something else, she heard her best friend’s voice in the background.

“Zhengrong, why did you take my phone? Ah…”

A rustling sound could be heard before the clear and crisp voice of her best friend came through the phone.

“Ge Ge, you finally called me! Are you still angry? I didn’t mean to hang up on you. My phone’s battery got drained, so—”

Hearing her best friend’s energetic voice, her eyes brimmed with tears in relief.

“Tang Xiaoyu, you a*shole, who values a lover more than a friend!”
