After a good night’s sleep, Pei Ge rose groggily from her warm and cozy bed. Her mood quickly improved when her eyes were graced by the warm sun rays outside her window.

“Ahhhaa…” She yawned as she climbed out of bed.

She had to report for work today, so she quickly put on her chosen office attire.

The fragrant smell of food wafted into her nostrils the moment she opened her bedroom door.

“Mom, why didn’t you sleep in longer?” Her grogginess vanished at the smell of food.

Hearing her daughter’s voice, Zhang Manhua, who was making breakfast in her apron in the kitchen, poked her head out and grinned. “Ge Ge, you’re up! The congee is ready; quickly wash up and have your breakfast.”

She could only oblige to her mother’s order.

Done washing up, she exited the toilet and walked into the dining room. There, she saw that breakfast had already been duly laid out on the table.

On the table was a bowl of piping hot, minced pork congee with egg toppings.

“Mom, why didn’t you stay in bed longer? I can just grab a bite on my way to work.” She took a seat at the table.

Zhang Manhua passed her a pair of chopsticks and smiled. “I’m already awake, so I naturally have to get up. Mom is still very healthy; you don’t need to worry.”

Hearing her mother’s response, she received the chopsticks with a lighter heart.

“Still, you should rest more,” she mumbled.

“Alright. I’ll continue resting when you leave. Hurry and dig in, or you’re gonna be late.” Zhang Manhua hurried her daughter with a broad smile.

“Mhm!” Pei Ge lowered her head and started gobbling up her food.

She involuntarily let out a blissful sigh when the warm congee and sweet bun hit the spot in her stomach.

Great. Mom isn’t sick. It’s really great…

After a hearty breakfast, she hastily grabbed her bag and left home.

“Mom, I’m off to work.”

“Alright! Come home early tonight. Mom will cook something yummy for you!”

Pei Ge closed the door grill and made her way out. She had just exited her building and was about to walk toward the bus stop when she spotted an extremely familiar car.

Erm…

Only when she saw the Maybach did she recall that a certain someone had mentioned something about picking her up today last night.

Aye, aye, aye! Last night’s conversation did actually happen, and it’s not just a product of my imagination!

She widened her eyes in disbelief at the Maybach parked right outside her apartment building.

The car window slowly rolled down and Ji Ziming’s chiseled face appeared in her sight.

“Why are you still standing there? Get in.” He peered at the silly-looking Pei Ge, who was standing stock-still on the same spot.

Pei Ge’s senses returned to her when she heard his low and clear voice. She nodded after a little lag. Opening the door to the passenger seat, she hopped in to the car.

Pak! She turned to give him an odd look once she closed the door.

“Buckle up,” he ordered coolly, as though he did not notice her odd gaze.

“Oh.” She blinked and did as she was told.

Done with it, he drove off.

“You…” She looked at the man with perplexity and then asked softly, “CEO Ji, why do you have to bring me to work?”

“Ziming.” Instead of answering her question, he merely emphasized how she should address him.

“…” She sat there, stunned.

Why do I have to call him ‘Ziming’? Their relationship should have ended that moment they had found out that her mother was not sick.

“CEO Ji, I—”

Before she could say anything further, he interrupted her once more.

“It’s ‘Ziming’,” he corrected again, sounding very serious and… stubborn.

“…” She paused for a moment at his stubbornness and could only change her way of addressing him at his insistence.

“Ziming,” she called softly. She noticed that, other than not interrupting her this time, he seemed to be… quite satisfied?

She shook her head lightly and decided not to care about his mood anymore. Instead, she returned to the topic she was unable to finish discussing just then.

“Ziming, I think our contract can be voided now, right? Since my mom isn’t actually sick—”

The car did an emergency brake once these words escaped her lips.

Screech!

As the braking was very sudden, her body was thrown forward, and she almost hit her head on the windshield even with the seatbelt on.

“Ahhh!” She was about to voice her complaint, but a cold and cutting voice sounded first.

“Pei Ge, what did you just say to me?!” He directed his frosty gaze on her. His voice was so cold it seemed capable of freezing one instantly.

She sat straight up and met his eyes.

Noting the man’s cloudy expression, she tightly pursed her lips together.

“I said that our contract should’ve already ended.”

The air in the car turned severely cold after she repeated herself.

She took a deep breath and balled her hands into fists, trying to resist the man’s intimidating aura.

“I’ll give you back the 500,000 yuan today, and that should end our contract, but I won’t quit my job since you did help our family a lot.”

She calmly made her stand and did not falter at the man’s chilling aura.

They were people from different worlds and should not get embroiled in each other’s lives.

She had no intention of asking him for help in the first place. Everything occurred simply because she was left with no choice. Now, all of that was over.

The words she could not say made her heart ache and her face turned slightly whiter.

“That’s not allowed! I don’t agree to it!” He stared her down with his gaze so cold it was scalding.

“Pei Ge, what right do you have to rescind the contract?!”
