“Why aren’t you saying anything?”

Ji Ziming’s low and grave voice startled Pei Ge into stopping her eyes from roving.

She lifted her eyes to him and found that his focus had left the files on his desk and was now on her. This realization caused her heart to thump faster.

“B-Because you are busy,” she stammered nervously.

Holding her gaze with his cold eyes, he put his fountain pen down and said, “So if I were to continue with my work, you would stand there like a fool and not talk to me?”

“Er… Of course, not.” She felt helpless inside upon noting his seemingly angry countenance. She did not know how she had managed to step on this man’s toes this time.

“Mhm,” he hummed in agreement as he affixed her with his frigid eyes.

The room quieted at his affirmative hum.

Frankly speaking, it was not that she did not want to speak; this man’s words just made it difficult for her to voice out anything.

Amid this awkward silence, she cautiously peeked at him and was surprised to find that his gaze had never left her.

His eyes that were dead set on quietly gazing at her caused her to entertain some silly thought of the man possibly liking her.

“… CEO Ji, I…” Feeling timid under his intense gaze, her heart beat rapidly. In a bid to stop herself from continuing down this abnormal path, she hummed and hawed her purpose for today.

“I…” She balled up her fingers into a fist, inhale deeply, and then spoke in haste, “I heard from Qitong that you are friends with the director of the capital’s main hospital, so I’m here today to ask for your help!”

Once she said this out loud, she felt relaxed, as though a heavy weight had lifted off her shoulders.

“Ask for my help?” An eyebrow of his arched slightly as he eyed her expressionlessly.

“Yes.” She felt numb at his reaction.

“I seem to remember that, not too long ago, someone rejected me with much determination,” he flatly remarked.

She pressed her lips speechlessly at his sarcastic remark and proceeded to complain about the man inwardly.

She knew it! This annoying person predictably made note of that moment! How could this man be so calculative toward a woman?! Seriously!

“Sorry, CEO Ji; I was in the wrong before, so please be magnanimous this time and forgive me!” she unhesitatingly lowered her head and admitted her mistake.

A wise man knew when to retreat! She would endure this for her mother! Who asked her to go looking for trouble with him in the past few days, anyway?! Endure, endure, endure!

“Sorry? Forgive you?” He rose from his seat and, with narrowed eyes, stared her down intently. He seemed to be eyeing his prey when he did this. “Did you think that those few words would wipe your slate clean?”

I knew he won’t forgive my previous rejection of his offer that easily! she thought bitterly to herself.

“Pei Ge, I can help you, but you must show your sincerity in asking for my help.” This statement was followed by a humorless laugh from the man, making her shudder.

She took a sharp intake of breath to calm herself and then met his gaze with much resolve. “Then, CEO Ji, what can I do for you to forgive my previous insolence and help me this time?”

In that moment, as he looked deeply into her eyes, which were as clear as a lake, his mind drew a blank, and he hesitated on how to answer her.

However, this hesitation only lasted for a brief moment.

Amid his wavering, the thought of this woman avoiding him resurfaced in his mind.

He also recalled that… many blind dates she had been on.

All of these were unbearable.

Thus, that stroke of hesitation evaporated in an instant.

He met her determined gaze and answered coolly, “I want you to marry me.”

His answer struck her dumb. It was so surreal she thought she was dreaming.

“C-CEO Ji, what are you saying?” she stammered.

“Marry me, and be my wife,” he reiterated simply.

The way he said these words made it seem as if he were talking about the weather.

And when he simply repeated his words, she really felt that she was dreaming.

“I’m dreaming, right? This dream seems so real, though,” she mumbled while dreamily looking up at him.

He frowned at her dreamy look.

He was about to say something to her when he saw the woman pinch her arm.

“AH!” she cried out in pain, yet her face had none of that pained look. Instead, it was filled with shock and fear.

“I’m… not dreaming?!” Then, this is real!

Her eyes widened in shock, and she looked at the man as though he were a fool.

Something must be wrong with CEO Ji’s brain!

Otherwise, why would he say such a thing?!

I marry him? He wants to marry me? I be his wife? He be my husband? He must be joking!

“Of course, you’re not dreaming.” He found her exaggerated reaction both ridiculous and amusing.

Was it that unbelievable for him to be with her in this foolish woman’s eyes?

“CEO Ji, you’re truthfully just pulling my leg, right? Why would you want to marry me…” She stared at him wide-eyed, feeling utterly confused.

She had clearly just asked this annoying person for his help into placing her mother on top of the priority list to undergo surgery, so why would the subject switch to her life’s biggest moment?

“We’ll just be married on paper; I’ll take you as my wife and you’ll take me as your husband,” he answered plainly, making it sound so simple.

“Huh?” She felt a headache coming on at his answer. No matter how hard she thought of this, she still could not figure out what was going on in this annoying person’s mind.

“CEO Ji, you’re not running a fever, right? Is your mind sober?” She blinked and looked at him cautiously.

He did not seem sick at all and, in fact, looked so normal, but why was abnormal words keep coming out of his mouth—

“Shut it! I’m very much sober!” He frowned at her indignantly.

She pursed her lips and was silent for a moment before tentatively asking.

“CEO Ji, do you like me, then?”
