Chapter 1451: Casting a long line to catch a big fish.

The hospital director brought Madam Ji to the ward when she came over.

Pei Ge heeded Ji Ziming’s advice and wrapped her left leg with a thick bandage. The blood on it was evident, making her injury seem quite serious.

“How did you end up like this? Why did you get knocked down so badly? It’s so heartbreaking.” The man’s mother placed the soup container on the side table. The look of concern on her face and the warmth from her hands were all genuine.

“I intended to bring Jingwan here, but she happened to be outside. Do you know why she returned home ahead of you guys?” Although the older woman appeared not to be saying this on purpose, she was actually testing her.

She glanced at the man sitting at one side, and this action was captured by the older woman.

“Why, don’t tell me that you did it for my son?” She sounded displeased.

“It wasn’t like that, mom.” Her son was the first to speak.

“Then, what was it like? Didn’t you force her to return home prematurely? Let me tell you: If it’s really the case, I’d definitely uphold justice for her.”

“It wasn’t truly like that,” chimed in Pei Ge. She really could not fathom what potion that lady had given the man’s mother. What did she have that made her able to control someone’s mind? She would certainly have a word with that lady once she got back home.

“Aren’t you here to visit Ge Ge? Don’t tell me you’re here to make a punitive expedition for that woman?” The man’s eyes turned slightly colder as he shot his mother a glance. “If you’re here for her, then you can leave now; I don’t want to talk about her at the moment.”

“What’s wrong with the young lady, such that you dislike her this much? She is the Qu family’s big mistress.”

“Mom, let me tell you the truth; that woman went home earlier because—”

“Ziming!” Pei Ge interrupted him, not wanting Qu Jingwan to lose face completely.

Looking at these two people, the older woman became even more convinced of the young lady’s words. “Pei Ge, if there’s anything, just say it. What is it that I can’t listen to?”

“It isn’t that you can’t hear but that the time isn’t right.” He understood his woman’s look but did not get the benefit in purposely covering up for that lady.

“Then, when’s the right time?” Madam Ji could not fathom this.

“If you have nothing else, you can leave.” He dismissed her. Since he could neither tell her the truth about that lady nor let her be sad, the best way was to send her away.

“Alright. I’ll go; I’ll go.” His mother turned to speak to Pei Ge. “I made this soup myself, so drink it up. Whatever it is, we’ll talk once you are okay and are back home.”

“Alright.” The other woman nodded.

When his mother left the ward, the man’s phone rang. Pei Ge became anxious when she heard his phone ringing. She almost forgot about that call while basking in his sweet talk.

He shot a look at her and picked up the call in the corridor outside.

“How’s the investigation going?”

“Boss, I only managed to find out about that person’s daughter. All other leads are broken.”

“Daughter?” Ji Ziming frowned as he did not remember hearing about that.

“Right. She’s in your hospital, having just had a heart bypass surgery. Oh, right. The last time I called, it was madam who picked up.”

“When was that?”

“The day before.”

“Alright. I got it. Continue with your investigation and update me if there’s anything.”

“Yes, boss.”

He hung up. Only then did he understand that his woman wanted to ask him questions the other day and they were probably related to this.

Indeed, when he entered the ward, she asked, “What are you investigating?”

“The one who knocked you down.”

“Then, why is there 7 million yuan involved, and what’s that about a heart surgery?”

“The person who turned himself in has a daughter with a heart disease. Last month, 7 million yuan was transferred in the person’s bank account, but from his employment history, including his relatives and friends, he couldn’t have managed to put together that amount.”

“So… you’re suspecting that he was bribed?”

Pei Ge hit the nail on the head.

“Mhm.” Ji Ziming sat by her bed and opened the soup container left by his mother. He poured some into a bowl and fed it to her using a small spoon. “But, currently, all the leads are broken.”

“You can’t check who transferred the money to him?”

He shook his head. “It was done online, so any IP address could be used.”

“What about the fingerprints on the car, and there should be CCTV on that road?”

“The fingerprints are his. The CCTV only captured the car and not the person.”

“‘Stone-dead hath no fellow’, huh?”

She took over the spoon and bowl as she continued speaking. “Where is his daughter?”

“Right in this hospital.”

“Let’s go look for her this afternoon.”

“Why are we visiting her?”

She lowered her head and finished her soup. “The chicken soup isn’t bad, and this is the first time your mom made me one.”

“If you like it, I’ll get her to make it for you every day.”

“That won’t work. Have you forgotten how she looked when she inquired about that matter involving Qu Jingwan?”

“Why didn’t you let me say it, then?” Ji Ziming lifted his head and looked at the woman drinking soup. His eyes darkened as he could not fathom what she wanted to do by stopping him earlier.

“That lady won’t leave the family for now, and she also can’t. I didn’t want you to say it then because of that.”
