“Mom, how great would it be if dad were still with us…”

Tears welled up in Pei Ge’s eyes as she spoke in a voice brimming with sadness.

Zhang Manhua paused when she heard her daughter mention her husband. She then shook her head with a smile.

“Silly child, why would you mention your dad all of a sudden?”

“I just… miss him…” said her daughter softly, sniffling as a small smile appeared on her face.

“Sigh… In the blink of an eye, many years have passed since he left us. I miss him, too…” she said, her voice full of emotions.

“Mom, I’ve never understood it. Didn’t dad just go to work that day? How come something like that happened to him?”

Tears gathered in her daughter’s eyes after asking such questions.

She felt tears begin to gather in hers as well upon hearing the hurt in daughter’s voice.

“Sigh… It’s probably all life… That’s not the road your dad usually took to go to work. The police said that he likely got run over by a car when he was trying to take a shortcut there.”

Pei Ge froze at her mother’s words.

Under the warm light of the lightbulb, her face visibly turned pale as her expression became a mixture of fear and shock.

Not the road dad usually took… Not the road dad usually took…

“Mom, tell me about that day dad got hit by a car in detail!”

She sat up straight and gripped her mother’s hand tightly as she stared into her eyes.

Zhang Manhua received a shock from her daughter’s reaction.

“Ge Ge, what’s wrong?”

She stared confusedly at her daughter with slightly knitted brows.

Even though she knew that her mother would overthink things from her reaction, her thoughts had been overtaken by her emotions!

“Mom, you remember what happened when dad got into the accident, right?”

“Yes, I do.” Zhang Manhua nodded, a bitter smile on her face.

How could she not remember? She had, in fact, not forgotten about it, not even for a second, all these years.

If not for her still having Pei Ge, she would have followed her husband to the grave the moment she had received news of his passing.

Alas, she could not because of their one and only daughter…

“Mom, tell me everything you know!”

Her daughter looked at her earnestly and spoke in a voice full of urgency.

“About what happened back then? Why are you asking me this?”

She looked confusedly at her daughter after her reminiscence ended.

“I-I just want to know more details about dad.”

Her daughter came up with a terrible lie, but despite knowing that she was lying, Zhang Manhua still spoke about what had happened back then.

“I still remember that day…”

Listening to the mother’s recount, she found a lot of inconsistencies to what had happened back then.

Never mind that her father had never taken that road to work before, just the fact that all the CCTVs were not working at where her father had his accident was too much to be a coincidence!

Her father drove to work, too, so why would he get out of the car there?

It did not make sense, even if they were to say that he was there to buy something.

The points of contention were imprinted in her mind, and she started to process all the information she had.

No matter what Qiao Jingyun was after, the information she had provided her was true!

There was something fishy regarding her father’s death!

It was not an ordinary accident!

“Mom, I think that there’s something about my dad’s death.”

Pursing her lips, she voiced out her thoughts.

When she heard her daughter’s words, Zhang Manhua paused and then shook her head.

“Your father’s death isn’t as complicated as you think. Even though the killer is still at large, the police concluded that your father was run over while buying by a drunk driver.”

“How could that be?”

There were so many coincidences and so many inconsistencies! Someone clearly set out to murder her father! He was not run over by a random, drunk driver!

“Your father was such a good man. He did not have any enemies, so why would anyone want to run him over intentionally? Suspects, motives—there’s none of those. It’s just an accident…”

As she spoke, tears welled up in Zhang Manhua’s eyes, and she felt choked up.

Pei Ge intended to ask more questions but decided against it when she saw how upset her mother was. She chose not to discuss her father’s death further.

“Ge Ge, you’re already getting married. Don’t think too much. Just focus on having a happy married life. I trust that your father will be happy for you from where he is now,” her mother said in a choked-up voice as she patted her hand.

She nodded heavily at her mother’s words. “I understand, mom.”

Even though she promised her mother this, she was surer of her decision to investigate this matter, especially after her mother’s recount of her father’s death.

After all, there were so many inconsistencies to it!

Furthermore, if her second uncle was indeed the culprit like what Qiao Jingyun had said, she could only imagine how much pain father had felt at that time? How terrible it must have been!

Thus, if what that woman said was the truth, then her second uncle, as well as cousin who had witnessed everything, must be punished!

After chatting for a while with her mother in the living room, she retired to her room.

Once she was in her room, she moved to lock the door.

She sat at her work desk and took out her father’s journal.

She read it carefully this time.

Perhaps due to her seeing things differently now, she… noted a lot of details that she had missed before.
