“Ge Ge, are you leaving now? Stay a while more and chat with me,” Mother Ji invited, unwilling to let her go.

Pei Ge looked at Ji Ziming’s dad, who was glaring at her from the side, and shook her head decisively.

There was someone here who could not stand her. Who knew what would happen if she stayed?

“No, thank you, Auntie Ji. I have something on, so I’ll take my leave for today.”

She smiled and left the villa.

Once she was outside, she took car of Zheng Yan again.

On the way back, she got her phone out of habit to check if he had contacted her.

She pouted a little when she did not see a message from him and called her mother.

“Hello, mom.”

“Ge Ge, what is it?”

Once the call went through, Zhang Manhua’s elated voice could be heard.

“Mom, I’m coming back home to stay tonight,” she said. Her voice softened when she heard her mother’s voice.

“What’s wrong? Why are you suddenly coming back to stay?” her mother asked at once.

“I’ll explain it to you once I arrive.”

“Okay. Have you eaten yet?”

“I’ve already eaten.”

…

As the mother-daughter pair chatted on the phone, the couple sitting in the living room of the villa was chatting, too.

“Hubby, what did you and Ge Ge talk about in the study?”

Mother Ji asked her husband once Pei Ge was gone.

“Nothing much,” replied Father Ji calmly.

“Stop lying. How can I not know the kind of person you are? Tell me everything now!” She snorted, giving him the side-eye.

Seeing the I-can-see-through-you look his wife was giving him, the man shook his head and told her the truth.

“What? You’re transferring Ge Ge to a branch company outside the capital?!” she exclaimed.

“Yup.” Looking at her panicky face, he gave a calm nod.

“…” She was devastated by his confirmation.

“You’re just making things difficult for Ge Ge! How many times do I have to tell you that you’re misunderstanding her?”

When she returned to herself, she started lecturing him.

“Honey, calm down. This transfer is for her own good. Don’t take it the wrong way,” he gently explained, gulping at the anger on her face.

“Fine. You’d better explain how this is for Ge Ge’s good!” She glared at him.

He shook his head helplessly and sighed. Patting the back of her hand, he said, “Think about it; if she really marries our Ming Ming, will her status as a small assistant work?”

“Why not? As long as our Ming Ming likes her, nothing else matters,” she answered uncaringly.

“Even if we don’t care, she will be under a lot of pressure. Come now; think of how others will see her,” he urged.

She frowned.

“Her family background is normal. Her work and looks are mediocre. She has nothing that stands out. If she marries our son in such a state, their unequal relationship will drive them apart one day.”

He continued to explain calmly, disregarding his wife’s opinion.

She froze when she heard his explanation.

“I’ll send her to the branch company not because I want to get between them but because I want to train her so that she can become a woman worthy of our son.” There was a smile on his face when he said this.

Alas, her frozen expression only lasted for an instant, and she rolled her eyes at him thereafter.

“You’re good! You’re patronizing me now, huh!” she said fiercely, pinching him on the arm.

“…” He flinched in pain from the pinch.

“You dared to lie to me now, huh!” She pinched even harder when she saw him flinch.

“Honey, ow!” This high and mighty man before others feigned being wronged in front of his wife.

“Honey, I’d lie to everyone but you.”

“And you’ve got the guts to make excuses! I dare you to say that you have no other intentions in transferring Ge Ge to the branch company!” Looking at the pain on his face, she reduced the force of her hand.

Since his wife had already seen through him, he curled his lips and began explaining himself to her.

“I do have other intentions, but the main goal is still their well-being.”

She snorted at his admittance.

“Hmph! I think it’s for your good, instead; you don’t even want her as your daughter-in-law.”

“Honey, I admit that I dislike her, but despite that, I still gave her a chance; transferring her to that branch company is a test. If she passes it, I won’t interfere in her relationship with our son and even recognize her.”

“Really?” She was moved by the sincerity on his face. “You’ll really recognize her?”

“Definitely.” He nodded. “But if she doesn’t pass my test, she… will never enter the Ji family, at least not in this life.”
