Three days later, Zhang Jiren found himself seated inside his office at their headquarters in Beijing. Even though he heard that Zhang Liang had returned to Shenzhen a day before, he chose to remain here to finish some work that needed his immediate attention.

Ever since he assumed the position of the CEO of Zhang Corporation, he was always on the move. He rarely stayed in one place and was always on the road or taking the earliest flight to his next destination. However, he always made sure to return to Shenzhen, where his twin sister and her family were currently staying.

He was planning to head to Shenzhen the next day after his obligations here were fulfilled and hopefully, he could have a word with Feng Tianyi to get updates about his brother-in-law’s investigation regarding the search for the perpetrator behind the Tang siblings’ accident.

Zhang Jiren wasn’t sure how he should tread through this sudden turn of events. Tang Beixuan had just passed away and truth be told, Zhang Jiren felt sadness over his death. The amount of time they spent together at work was enough to establish a mutual respect and friendship between them.

Not only had Tang Beixuan been a good brother to his sister, but he was also a good friend to everyone he worked with, not using his family connection to intimidate his colleagues.

Now that he was gone, leaving a pregnant girlfriend in his wake, Zhang Jiren wasn’t sure how he would be able to stop Zhang Wuying from discovering Tang Beixuan’s child with Li Meili.

He cannot just brush off the possibility that the Zhang family would take advantage of Li Meili’s child to secure their influence on the Li family. Although it may take some time before they discover the existence of the child, Zhang Jiren needed to plan ahead in order to avoid it happening.

He placed his pen down, leaned his back on his seat and shut his eyes. Though it wasn’t his responsibility he felt the need to do something, but thinking about it, he didn’t have enough reason to get involved with the Li family.

Even though Li Meili and her father had been against each other for years, Zhang Jiren had seen how the old man looked at his daughter with longing. He had no doubt that if the Zhang family dared to bully Li Meili, the whole Li family would pounce on them to protect their princess.

As to whether or not they would be willing to accept Li Meili’s child was another question. A conservative family like the Lis might have some problems accepting the child. Zhang Jiren knew the misery of living as an illegitimate child of a wealthy family, since it was something he had experienced first hand.

He would never wish for another child to suffer the way he did when he was younger, especially Li Meili’s child. Children shouldn’t be the ones who should pay for the mistakes of their parents as they didn’t have a choice regarding which set of parents or family they would be born into.

Zhang Jiren’s train of thoughts halted when the intercom buzzed, pulling his attention. Because he was a person who appreciated silence during his working hours, he was easily annoyed whenever he was distracted by unexpected guests coming to see him without an appointment.

“Boss, someone is here to see you but she doesn’t have an appointment with you.” He heard the secretary say nervously. Something about her tone says that she cannot chase the person out. Zhang Jiren wondered who would want to see him in such short notice.

“Who is it?” He couldn’t help but ask. He could only hope that it wasn’t those crazy women who’d been trying to stalk him, trying to get his private number just to spam him with random messages. Zhang Jiren had lost count of how many times he had to change his number to avoid them.

“She said her name is Li Meili and she claimed that you know her.” The secretary answered promptly.

Zhang Jiren furrowed his brows, not understanding why Li Meili would seek him like this. It wasn’t like the woman didn’t have any other means to reach him. If she wanted to, she could have asked his contact details from her older brother.

“Let her in.” He said. Since Li Meili personally came here to see him, Zhang Jiren could only assume that whatever reason she had, she wanted to discuss it with him privately.

It didn’t take too long before he spotted Li Meili entering his office, taking a seat on one of the black leather couches across his massive desk. He was still looking smart, dressed in a black business suit and a white dress shirt underneath. His tall figure was almost comparable with Feng Tianyi.

The secretary left for a moment and brought his guest some refreshments but Li Meili didn’t bother to touch it. Her morning sickness hadn’t started, but her heightened sense of smell had caused her to avoid certain types of food with strong aroma.

Zhang Jiren stood up from his chair and rounded his desk to join Li Meili. He sat across her and poured them two cups of freshly brewed tea. Li Meili paid attention to his every movement, not uttering a single word the whole time.

“What brings you here, Li Meili?” Zhang Jiren took a sip from his cup and eyed the woman seated across him. He couldn’t think of any reason why Li Meili would suddenly want to see him.

Li Meili remained silent for a moment, as if she was trying to sort her thoughts out. It was a full minute before her eyes flashed with determination to face Zhang Jiren. It was obvious that it wasn’t easy for her to come to such a decision herself.

“I have a proposition for you.” She said with a straight face.

Now, that certainly took Zhang Jiren’s undivided attention.

“And that is?” He raised a slender eyebrow at her.

“Marry me. Be my husband for at least two years.”
